The central government has announced that from November 15, vehicles entering toll plazas without a valid FASTag will be charged double the normal toll fee on cash payment. However, those paying through UPI will get some relief.

Vehicles entering toll plazas without a valid FASTag will have to pay only 1.25 times the toll fee if they use the Unified Payment Interface (UPI).
The move is part of the amendment to the National Highways Fee Rules 2008, which aims to reduce cash transactions and encourage digital payments.
Understand the new rule in simple terms: If a vehicle does not have a valid FASTag and needs to pay ₹100 for toll, the toll fee will increase to ₹200 in cash and ₹125 through UPI.
The new rule is expected to improve traffic flow and bring transparency in toll collection. It will also encourage commuters to adopt digital payments.
What is FASTag?
FASTag is an electronic toll collection system operated by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) that allows vehicles travelling on highways to pay toll digitally. The tag uses radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, which allows toll fees to be deducted automatically.
In 2021, the central government made FASTag mandatory for vehicles, and its use is increasing. Under the new rules, authorities hope to reduce cash payments and encourage digital transactions.
Pass facility for Rs 3,000
On August 15 this year, NHAI launched the FASTag-based annual pass, which allows seamless travel on national highways without the need to repeatedly recharge the RFID card for toll payments. This prepaid pass is applicable only for non-commercial private vehicles such as cars, jeeps and vans.
